Accountability &

Advocacy
.

The VlP-ManAlive Accountability Advocacy Behavior/Belief Re-Education Program places ending his violence first on his agenda.
The VlP-ManAlive Accountability Advocacy Behavior/Belief Re-Education Program places ending his violence first on his agenda. It teaches him the principles of accountability and advocacy and how to apply them first to himself to stop his violence, and then to the community at large to stop its support for his abusive behaviors.

In the first part of this work. the VlP-ManAlive program teaches men to account for the impact of what they have learned. They have learned to confuse their sense of self-worth. character and personality with a belief in a male-role aggressive stereotype. and then use emotionally. verbally. physically or sexually violent behavior to enforce the image/role they have made for themselves.

In the 1st Level class, “I decide to stop my physical violence”. the men go through an exercise to learn how the process of controlling and abusive behavior is broken down into small and distinct steps of thinking within their beliefs. i.e. of how they learned to Feel. Act. Communicate and Think within the Male-Role Belief System training. The men learn to account for their own violent behavior. its intent and its roots.

They look at the impact of their adherence to a learned system of self-denial and need for control over the survival forces external to them, particularly to their partners and children. This Level begins a process of re-education, i.e. re-learning the knowledge men were initially born with, that has been slowly changed to their present level of confusion.

From this safe base of understanding. and in the community of their peers in the program. the men are free to become their own advocates. Detach themselves and their sense of self-worth from the stereotype. and learn to depend once again on their own power to survive. They stop considering women's independent thought or contrary actions. as the kind of event that would require a violent remedy.

The 2nd Level class. “I decide to be assertive not aggressive" the men go through an exercise to learn how to identify their authentic needs and identify who they really are. outside of their previous male-role belief system training.

In the 3rd Level class. “I decide to nurture and not to control" provides the opportunity to practice new assertive behaviors and attitudes with their peers. At the same time the classes teach a step-by-step community advocacy process. In each class senior men are expected to learn to advocate what they have learned by teaching it to new men coming in. All classes are designed with a rotational entry system. A continuous enrollment that inter-mixes the new men arriving in the class. with those who have been attending classes for 2, 6, 9, or 16 weeks.
